NRIs & PIOs can now invest in Indian mutual funds, both equity and debt schemes, through normal banking channels. NRIs should have the following documents in order to invest in Indian mutual fund schemes:

1.  Indian PAN card
2.  Aadhar Card

3. Indian Address proof like Aadhar Card, Voter ID, Electricity Bill, Bank account statement etc,
4.  NRE or FCNR account in any bank in India with overseas address.

NO separate permission is required from RBI as long as the investment is made in compliance of the conditions for general permission granted by RBI.
